Cefatax
Cefotaxime is a third-generation antibiotic, used for infections of the respiratory tract, skin, bones, joints, urogenital system, meningitis, and septicemia
• Injectables
Indications
• Gastrointestinal infections : peritonitis
•
Respiratory infections : pneumonia
•
Genito-urinary infections : Gonorrhoea
•
Meningitis, particularly in neonates,septicaemi
•
Surgery prophylaxis, bone infections : osteomyelitis
Pharmacological Class
Antibiotic : ß - lactamine family, 3rd generation cephalosporin sub-group
Pharmacological Properties
Antibiotic
Mechanism of Action
Bactericidal due to its action on the membrane of the organism. Cefatax resists the hydrolysing action of the ß - lactamase secreted by the organism
Side Effects
Rare : skin rash, fever and diarrhoea.
Contradictions
• Concommittant administration of aminoglycoside antibiotics (spectinomycin, streptomycin, gentamicin, neomycin) due to the high risk of nephrotoxicity
•
Subjects allergic to cephalosporins and penicillin.
Observations
• In the presence of anaerobic organisms, combine Cefatax with Metazol (metronidazole) or Tinizol (tinidazole).
•
Prior to making the solution, store the bottle of Cefatax away from heat and light. Once the solution is made up, the product can be stored in the refrigerator for 24 hours. After this, the product can not be administered
•
Incompatibility : never mix Cefatax with another antibiotic in the same syringe or in the same infusion
