Pharmacological Properties

Potent broad spectrum anthelmintic

Mechanism of Action

It exerts an anti-parasitic effect on nematodes and most cestodes. The anthelmintic action inhibits the polymerisation of the tubulins, thus blocking the absorption of glucose by the parasites, leading to their death.

Side Effects

Very rare and minor : nausea, diarrhoea

Contradictions

Relative : pregnancy, lactation

Observations

• No ban on food or drink
• Treatment does not require any laxative
• For pinworms, the dose should be repeated after 2 to 3 weeks because of auto-infestation. The tablets should be taken with a little water or chewed during meals
