Mechanism of Action
• Magnesium trisilicate : neutralises hydrochloric acid by a complex chemical reaction that leads to the formation of magnesium chloride, magnesium carbonate and silicon dioxide. The silicic acid forms a protective film over the gastric mucosa. It also has absorbent properties and absorbs pepsin as well as dietary proteins and iron.
•
Aluminium hydroxide : reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form aluminium chloride, which in the intestine forms insoluble basic salts, mainly aluminium phosphates, leading to the removal of the phosphorus on absorption from the small intestine. This property is used in the treatment of phosphate lithiasis, secondary hyperparathyroidism and chronic renal insufficiency. The preference is for an oral solution of aluminium and magnesium hydroxide gels
Side Effects
Linked to aluminium hydroxide:Potential constipation
•
Phosphorus depletion in case of prolonged use or at high doses
Contradictions
Linked to magnesium: severe renal insufficiency
Observations
As a precaution, antacids should be taken at different times to other drugs, more than 2 hours if possible, and 4 hours for fluoroquinolones
