Artemisinine derivative

Pharmacological Properties
Mainly blood schizonticide

Mechanism of Action
• A reduction in nucleic acid synthesis resulting in the parasite's protein synthesis inhibition
Destruction of the parasite's membrane

Side Effects
At therapeutic doses, the drug is well tolerated. At high doses, there have been reports of gastrointestinal disorders, dizziness, neutropenia, elevated enzyme values and bradycardia in some patients

Contradictions
Pregnancy, unless otherwise advised by the doctor

Observations
As the levels of recurrence are high with dihydroartemisinine treatment, it is recommended that it be combined with another anti-malarial (e.g. mefloquine)
