Trimethoprim is a bacteriostatic antibiotic mainly used in the treatment of urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections

Indications
Infections of the following :
Upper and lower respiratory tract.
Genito-urinary tract.Meningococcal meningitis in combination with crystallised peni G (procaine free).Pneumococcal meningitis

Mechanism of Action
Bacteriostatic :
Sulfatrim inhibits the action of the para-aminobenzoic acid of the organism (the sulphonamide substitutes the para-aminobenzoic acid of the organism required for the production of folic acid, a substance useful in the development of the organism)

Side Effects
Allergies : Skin rash, Nausea and Stomach pain

Contradictions
• Severe renal insufficiency
Blood disorders : formation of methaemoglobin
Hepatic insufficiency
Pregnancy : end of 3rd trimester
