Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal, genito-urinary and post-operative prophylaxis

Indications

Infections of the following :
• Upper and lower respiratory tract
• Gastrointestinal (typhoid fever)
• Genito-urinary. Other infections (dermatology)
• Post-operative prophylaxis

Antibiotic : quinolone family, fluoroquinolone group

Mechanism of Action

Bactericidal with double action:
• DNA-gyrase block which in turn inhibits microbial DNA
• Destruction of the bacterial membrane

Side Effects

Very rare : diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain and headache.

Contradictions

• Allergies to quinolones.
• Pregnancy
• Lactation
• Children until end of growing stage

Observations

In the presence of anaerobic organisms, combine with Metazol (metronidazole) or Tinizol (tinidazole)
