Erycin

Erythromycin is one of the most widely used antibiotics, effective against many bacteria. It is used instead of penicillins and tetracyclines for people allergic to these drugs

Mechanism of Action
Bacteriostatic or bactericidal depending on concentration. Inhibits the protein synthesis of the organism

Side Effects
Very rare - fever, eosinophilia, skin rash and especially cholestatic hepatitis

Contradictions
• None, except in case of hypersensitivity to erythromycin.
Caution in case of pregnancy

Observations
• Inactivated in acid medium
The presence of food impedes its absorption.
If combined with theophylline or aminophylline (asthma), reduce the dose of the latter
