Amidol

Amidol is used for the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate pain intensity, febrile states and headache

Pharmacological Class
Para-aminophenol derivative

Pharmacological Properties
Analgesic, Antipyretic

Mechanism of Action
• Peripheral analgesic
Centrally acting antipyretic on the hypothalamus thermal control centre by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis

Side Effects
Rare (sometimes skin rash allergies)

Contradictions
• Allergy to paracetamol
Hepato-cellular insufficiency

Observations
• It has no anti-inflammatory property
It does not cause stomach irritation or haemolytic anaemia
There is a risk of poisoning in elderly subjects and especially in young children
At high doses (i.e. > 10gr / day in adults, or 150mg/ kg of body weight in a single dose in children) it can cause fatal hepatic necrosis
