Lopeshal is also marketed as brand name Loprade

Mode of administration:
Lopeshal: Oral

Mechanism of action:
Loperamide hydrochloride acts by slowing intestinal motility and by affecting water and electrolyte movement through the bowel. Lopeshal binds to the opiate receptor in the gut wall. Consequently, it inhibits the release of acetylcholine and prostaglandins, thereby reducing peristalsis and increasing intestinal transit time. Lopeshal increases the tone of the anal sphincter, thereby reducing incontinence and urgency.

Indications:
Lopeshal is indicated for the control and symptomatic relief of acute nonspecific diarrhea and of chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease. Lopeshal is also indicated for reducing the volume of discharge from ileostomies.

Contraindications:
Lopeshal is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Lopeshal or to any of the excipients, in patients with abdominal pain in the absence of diarrhea.
