We have put together some interesting facts about headaches in the hope to prepare you against those dreaded episodes better.

2

Headaches can be inherited

Yes, the reason you get those nasty migraines may be simply because you inherited them from a relative. This means that some people are more genetically predisposed to headaches than others, especially migraines. Unfortunately, if even one of your parents suffers from migraines, you have a 50% greater chance of getting them too.

3

All you may need is sleep

The human body senses when daily routines are changed, and it reacts to these changes in a variety of ways. So, headaches can be the body’s way of telling you that you’ve been getting less sleep recently. If you can’t afford to get the recommended daily dose of 8 hours of shut-eye, then at least you can try and make your sleeping-waking transition easier and gentler to try and allow your body time to adjust.

4

Yet, don’t sleep too much

The body reacts to changes in sleep patterns in both directions; less sleep or too much sleep. The fact that you’ve been spending much more time in bed may be the reason for the recent headaches you’ve been experiencing. It may be hard, especially during a lazy holiday, but try not to overindulge in sleep, and the headaches may just go away.

5

You do not need drugs for all headaches

A lot of the time, the first instinct is to take a painkiller when a headache comes. The use of these painkillers is largely unnecessary as the headache will eventually clear off without the drug, just like a cold would. Typically, within 12 to 24 hours, harmless headaches subside. So stay hydrated, and ride it out if you can.

6

Hormonal changes can cause headaches

Most women who suffer from headaches during their periods will know this well. Some women experience these headaches at the beginning of their periods, while others experience them throughout the duration of their periods. One’s female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, levels drop at this time, causing both tension headaches and migraines.

7

It can be more than just a headache

Certain headaches are as a result of the dilation of blood vessels or bleeding in the brain. These headaches can be life-threatening and are usually sudden and very sharp. When do you think you need to call a doctor? If you also have had a head injury, fever, vision problems, or nausea and vomiting – then it’s best to get checked up.

From possible causes to ancient remedies, we hope you may have learnt a thing or two about headaches and how best to combat them.
