Pharmacological Properties
Mechanism Of Action
Binds to penicillin-binding proteins and inhibits final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, resulting in cell-wall death; resists degradation by beta-lactamase; proper dosing and appropriate route of administration are determined by condition of patient, severity of infection, and susceptibility of microorganism.
Side Effects
Pain at injection site; hypersensitivity reactions, rash, pruritus; diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting; candidiasis; eosinophilia, neutropenia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia. Potentially Fatal: Anaphylactic reaction; nephrotoxicity.
Contraindications
Concommittant administration of aminoglycoside antibiotics (spectinomycin, streptomycin, gentamicin, neomycin) due to the high risk of nephrotoxicity. Subjects allergic to cephalosporins and penicillin.
Observations
In the presence of anaerobic organisms, combine Cefatax with Metazol IV (Metronidazole). Probenecid decreases Cefotaxime elimination. Incompatibility: never mix Cefatax with another antibiotic in the same syringe or in the same infusion.
