Formulation: Silver Sulfadiazine 1.0% wlw Cream
Packaging Unit: 50gm Cream
Dosage: Apply cream on affected area once or twice daily.
Indications
Treatment and prophylaxis of infection in severe burns, cuts and wounds.
Pharmacological Class
Topical sulphonamide.
Pharmacological Properties
Antibacterial
Mechanism Of Action
The silver salt acts mainly on the cell wall and membrane to disrupt its intergrity thus allowing it to impair the essential enzymes, bacterial DNA and RNA leading to cell death.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea; hypersensitivity, skin reactions; haematuria; crystalluria; thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, eosinophilia.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sulphonamides; porphyria; premature infants and infants < 2 month; pregnancy and lactation.
Observations
Before changing the dressing (in principle every 24 hours), the skin should be cleansed. In case of extensive burns, the systemic absorption of sulfadiazine exposes the patient to the general complications of sulphonamides (haematological, renal).
