Indications
Urinary Tract Infections, Acute otitis media, Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, Traveller's diarrhoea in adults.

Intermediate acting Sulphonamide combination.

Mechanism Of Action
Co-trimoxazole exhibits the synergistic actions of its components (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) by 10-fold. Trimethoprim: Inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, thereby blocking production of tetrahydrofolic acid from dihydrofolic acid. Sulfamethoxazole: Inhibits bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid.
Side Effects
Renal failure, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, anorexia; skin rashes, urticaria.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity; severe renal or hepatic insufficiency; infants
Observations
Patients should be instructed to maintain an adequate fluid intake in order to prevent crystalluria and stone formation.
